The football is in the possession of one team, the offence. It consists of 11 players. The offence tries to move the ball down field by running or throwing it. To score points, it must cross the goal line and get into the end zone.
The defense is the other team. It will attempt to stop the offensive team, and force it to give up possession of the ball. When the offensive team scores, or is forced to surrender possession, the roles will be reversed. The game will be stopped only after all four quarters have been played.
How to Play Football
Field It measures 100 yards in length and 53 yards in width. Yard markers, or the small white markings on the field, will assist officials, players and fans in keeping track of the ball. The most important area of the field is the end zone. Each end of the field is 10 yards longer. This makes it easy to add up. Points are scored when the offense moves the ball in the defense’s end zone.
Timing – The game consists of four quarters each lasting 15 minutes, with a 12-minute break. There will be two-minute breaks at the end of each quarter to allow teams to change sides of the field. The second half will begin with a kickoff the same as in the first quarter. If the game ends tied, a 15-minute overtime will be played. The coin toss will decide possession. The winning team is the first to score.
Each team will be broken into three units: offense, defense, and special teams. Only 11 players can play on the field at a time. If the team has possession of the ball, the offense players will be on the field. The defense players are the ones who try to stop the offense. Special teams are responsible for kicking situations.
Some Football Basics
Down The offense will receive 4 downs or plays to move 10 yards. It scores, and it starts again at the first down. The ball will be awarded to the opposing team if it moves 10 yards or scores.
Touchdown – This refers the offense moving the ball down to the field and crossing to the goal line. It is worth points.
Goal – If a team runs out downs, the kicker may attempt a field goal on fourth downsn. This is when the ball is kicked through the goal posts in the back of the end zone. This award is worth three points.
Turnover This refers to the defense getting the ball back from the offer through an interception, a fumble or a fumble.
